VASTELAOVEND IN LIMBURG
Vastelaovend in Limburg 2024 brought Ramona Nieuwenhuisen’s artwork into homes and windows across the province. Nearly all 75,000 posters were collected within three days of the unveiling.

The artwork behind Vastelaovend in Limburg 2024
Provincie Limburg, Dagblad De Limburger and the Sjeng Kraft Kompenei commissioned Ramona to create the annual carnival artwork. It was presented at the Gouvernement in Maastricht in January 2024 and reproduced as a free poster for people across Limburg.
Flowers, feathers and an elaborate headdress surround the central figure. The colourful composition brings Ramona’s portrait work together with the costumes and celebration of Limburg’s carnival tradition.

A poster people made their own
People hung the Vastelaovend in Limburg poster in their windows, framed it for their living rooms and surrounded it with carnival decorations. The photographs shared with Ramona show how the same artwork found a different place in each home.
The rapid distribution of the 75,000 posters was recorded by the Samewirkende Limburgse Vastelaovesvereniginge. In February 2024, the organisation awarded Ramona its Hoesorde for her artistic contribution to Vastelaovend. Read the SLV announcement (in Dutch).

From the Gouvernement to the museum
The original artwork was first displayed at the Gouvernement in Maastricht. It was then shown in Feest! at the Limburgs Museum in Venlo, before returning to the Gouvernement, where it hangs alongside the artworks created for earlier carnival posters.
