TOEKAN & APPELMOES — VAN DER VALK VENLO
Toekan and Appelmoes are three large artworks created by Ramona Nieuwenhuisen for the meeting rooms at Van der Valk Venlo, in collaboration with Galerie Ptah. The largest Toekan measures three metres wide by two metres high.

Toekan and Appelmoes: starting with the room names
After creating artworks for Restaurant Zest, Ramona was invited to develop work for the hotel’s first-floor conference and meeting rooms. Once again, she worked with Galerie Ptah.
The room names gave the project its subjects. For Toekan, she worked with toucans, foliage and flowers in the green and gold tones of the interior. For Appelmoes, she chose the familiar bowl of applesauce with a cherry on top, adding a toucan pattern to the bowl.

Toekan
The two Toekan artworks measure 2 × 1.5 metres and 3 × 2 metres. The horizontal work was the largest Ramona had created and delivered at the time. The photograph of her beside it during installation makes that scale easier to understand than the artwork alone.
Appelmoes
The bowl of applesauce with a cherry is a familiar Van der Valk detail. It gave Ramona a playful subject for the Appelmoes meeting room.
Apples, blossom and butterflies surround the bowl. The complete composition and the photograph above the meeting table show how a small, everyday subject became a large artwork for the room.
