PAVONE — BAR ELLO — VAN DER VALK VENLO

Pavone began with the wallpaper at Bar Ello, Van der Valk Venlo. Ramona Nieuwenhuisen recognised peacock feathers in its pattern and used that idea for a round artwork on velvet, made in collaboration with Galerie Ptah.

How the wallpaper became Pavone

For this commission, the interior gave Ramona a very specific starting point. The repeating shapes in Bar Ello’s wallpaper reminded her of peacock feathers. She developed that observation into Pavone, the Italian word for peacock.

She brought the wallpaper pattern into the artwork itself, behind the bird and flowers. In the full view, you can see the design continue from the wall into the framed composition. The round format gives the work its own outline within that repeated pattern.

Velvet and embroidered gold details

The teal peacock and soft pink flowers pick up the colours of the interior. The material matters here too: Pavone was realised on velvet fabric, with embroidered gold-thread details and a gold frame.

The close-up photographs show the surface, the peacock and the edge of the frame. They make details visible that are harder to see in a photograph of the whole bar.
